Are you COOL..? The 'Baeku' Revelation... Part 1
So, we see a guy and we accept him and bestow upon him the status of being 'cool', and go " hez cool" and there are the blokes we see, don't accept and we label them as..well there are a number of terms we use on these blokes actually. In tamil, we have 'kaenaiyan' pronounced 'k' 'nai' 'yan', which probably means something along the lines of 'a fool' or someone 'hopelessly naive and blur'. We have 'kottai' or 'kotteh' pronounced as 'ko' 'tear', which actually means the seed of a fruit, any fruit, it is also used to name 'balls' or a part of the male reproductive organ, called 'testicles'.When we say, " oh that fella ah..kotteh la he", what we mean is that certain someone is not as 'cool' as he wants to be or basically a poseur. We have 'anjadi' or 'anjax' which is pronounced the way it is spelled;it literally means '5 foot' , it is actually an endearment bestowed upon the seemingly unruly and violent looking tamilian, who in some cases would wear bell bottom pants,a tshirt with a lot of holes,( these look like singlets, usually black) or a tshirt with a large tiger or lion print to symbolise his kingly nature, a few earrings, usually not studs, is tattoed and vulgar.Actually I am still not sure if an 'anjadi' belongs to the 'cool' or 'uncool' category, because these guys don their bell bottoms with pride maybe in their valiant attempt to revive the 70s hippy culture. Then we have 'oorex' or 'ooru', a friend of mine says 'oodex'. This term is used to refer to the Indian immigrants or workers, and connotes a person with very bad fashion sense, like a girl wearing a punjabi suit and track shoes. It also connotes someone who is traditional and backward in his thinking; "dont be so ooru la dei" or "check out the oorex"- when we want to call to attention some guy with very bad fashion sense. With all this we have 'baeku' which is also pronounced like it is spelled, though we do not stress on the last syllable much. 'baeku' is used to refer to a bookish looking nerd, preferably with oily hair and big, old fashioned glasses to do justice to the 'baeku' image. A 'baeku' does not have any fashion sense. These are the few terms I am aware of to describe a guy we do not think is 'cool'. There are other terms though which I am not sure about, like ' soy plug', it has absolutely nothing to do with soy beans or an electric plug, that much I am sure.So there may be other terms in this category which I would not be touching on due to my ignorance of the diversities of the Tamil lingo.
As for who exactly and what exactly it takes to be cool, I believe is a matter of subjectivity.Below I have showcased in the hall of 'the cool' some of the men who have the common consensus of significant many as being 'cool'. ( to be continued......)
